Ubuntu 24.04 - cannot log in after log out

I am using:

Ubuntu 24.04 LTS
Kernel 6.8.0-38-generic
Displaylink driver 6.0.0-24 from the Synaptic repository

Everything works fine on start up, but if I log out (either through choice or to reset the other issue I've added here: #947 ), it is not possible to log back in. The Ubuntu logo appears, but the log in box in the middle of the screen never appears and the only solution is to restart the machine. If unplugged from the dock, the log in box appears, so it does appear to be a Displaylink issue.
