An observation whilst experimenting, SetGroups is called during onAutoLinking on first creation and then triggered immediately again as OnExternalLogin is sequentially triggered.

I don't think it's a huge overhead, and not sure of a workaround, but better minds might :-)

Turns out it's getting run twice on each login, the autolinking is called every login which isn't what I'd have expected
