Senior Full Stack Developer (WordPress focus)

The Institute for Nonprofit News (INN), a network of 120+ nonprofit news organizations (learn more about them in our member directory), has an immediate opening for a Senior Full Stack Developer on our product and technology team.

The INN network represents the broadest field of independent investigative and public service newsrooms in the U.S. The nonprofit model is growing and we believe it is particularly well-suited to supporting innovative business and editorial models for public service journalism.

Our product and technology team supports many startups and small nonprofits with limited technology resources. We also serve a central role foster collaboration among more well-established newsrooms. The team focuses primary on problems that we are uniquely suited to tackle at a network level, such as:

  • Hosting and supporting 50+ member websites using a WordPress platform/framework we design, build and maintain http://largoproject.org
  • Building open source tools to support members' editorial work
  • Providing consulting services, training and resources to help members and a select group of consulting clients

Our work is divided between our own projects advancing the sector as a whole and one-on-one consulting and support for members and clients.

The ideal candidate for this position is an experienced full stack developer with some specific expertise working with WordPress who is looking to apply her/his skills to moving the industry forward by tackling problems facing nonprofit news organizations.

You'll be joining an accomplished team in a key role as senior developer, but our team is highly collaborative so you'll have an opportunity to work on a diverse range of projects while continuing to learn and develop new skills.

Your specific responsibilities will include:

  • Serving as lead developer and principal architect of the Largo platform and INN’s other WordPress work
  • Leading the development of tools and applications for INN members and clients
  • Managing the technical infrastructure for INN’s other technology projects
  • Having a strong voice and say in INN’s overall technology strategy
  • Supporting and mentoring other (particularly more junior) team members; Supporting and advocating for the work of developers at INN member organizations
  • Serving as an advocate for INN’s work, including writing posts for the team blog, promoting our work, presenting at conferences, etc.

Here are some desired skills and attributes for the position. We understand you might not have all of these covered but if this roughly sounds like a good fit for your skills and interests we would love to hear from you!

  • Several years of professional experience in web development, ideally in a news/media environment
  • Proven commitment to writing clean, well-documented code
  • Strong front-end dev skills (HTML/CSS/JS); Ideally you have some experience with CSS pre-compilers, front-end frameworks, common JS libraries, etc.
  • Knowledge of and experience with the full LAMP stack with a particular focus on PHP and MySQL
  • Experience developing for WordPress including themes, plugins and experience with WordPress multisite
  • Experience with version control (we use git) and deployment tools (we use fabric)
  • Experience managing hosting infrastructure (we use AWS and WP Engine); Ideally this would include optimizing and scaling large, complex CMS deployments
  • Commitment to openness and sharing/writing/talking about your work
  • Curiosity and the willingness to learn, adapt and teach

Nice to have:

  • Experience with one or more other server-side programming languages (for our non-WordPress stuff we're mostly using Python)
  • WordPress core contributor and/or active involvement in the WordPress developer community
  • Experience writing end-user documentation and explaining complex technical concepts to non- (or less-) technical users.

This is a full-time position with benefits. Our compensation package is extremely competitive and commensurate with experience. We are a distributed team and this is a remote position. Previous experience working remotely would be helpful but we'll do whatever we can to help and support your transition if this is your first remote job.
