On drives with EPC (Extended power conditions), it's easy to know what the specific timing for idle/standby is, but on older drives it is vendor unique what the timers are set to and there are some interactions between the drive's standby timer and the last change to APM (Advanced power management) that can be a little confusing.

Old drives won't have EPC and it is unlikely to be made available with a firmware update.
