Passing events from one view/viewmodel to another

I am building a prototype for an app where a page has two view/viewmodel components inside a "master" view/model. One of them is an Image picker from a set of thumbnails and the other is a viewer/editor for the image.

The images themselves are provided by a service.

When I pick an image on the picker side, I want to propagate the event to viewer. I don't know what the best way for doing this is under stacked? Ideally I would like to keep these as decoupled as possible as I intend to reuse the viewer in different pages/apps.
