Last time I looked at ZMap it had serious reliability issues (crashing, not working over VPN, failing to autodetect gateway MAC, etc.). Since then ZMap 3.0 has been released, which claims to fix a lot of these bugs.
Also, @charlestruluck has recommended ZDNS as a potential replacement for massdns. We haven't many issues with the massdns binary itself, aside from the inconvenience of having to compile it, and a small bit of inconsistency in the results. But it would be worth it to compare these two and see how ZDNS' speed and consistency match up.
