What defines a "commercial product"? #52
Comments
My definition of commercial use is an app that directly brings profit to the developer/group that developed it. Examples include: A paid app on the App Store/Cydia/Other store, or a free app on said store that contains advertisements. However, these are just examples and not the complete listing of what is "commercial usage" as there can be variants such as a free App for iOS, but a paid compliment that's required on another platform such as Windows/OS X. So my definition of a non-commercial product is one that doesn't cost any money directly from the user, and doesn't have advertisements or surveys to try and gain money. Now I have received some requests to make a commercial license for this, however it's not as simple as that, since this project has several important contributors, not just me. So before we can setup a commercial license, we'll have to sort out who gets how much percentage, and what it should cost the licensee either as a percentage of profits, or a fixed amount. Let me know if you would like any further clarification on my explanation or have any more questions regarding licensing. |
Would it be possible to get the app on the appstore making it easer to get? Or is that not a possibility |
Hi, I was also wondering if a company using this app internally, just as a tool (for example, making screenshots/videos of apps), would also be against the spirit of the license. If this was not against the spirit of the license, would you be willing to do the following? Remove commercial use restriction, replace with something like "While Looking forward to any thoughts you may have. |
Hi @coolstar , Please email me about licensing. I am interested but I couldn't find your email address on your profile. |
@coolstar, |
I'm interested in this project, but before I look further, I'm interested in how a commercial product is defined. This article brings up a few good points about the issues with noncommercial restrictions: http://www.techdirt.com/articles/20081207/2239253051.shtml
