The map shows an open bike lane on Pennsylvania Ave SE from 27th Ave SE to Southern Ave. However, no such lane exists. (There is a sidewalk but it is not marked as an option for cyclists.)
Note: the github map shows that the bike lane goes to Southern Ave and the DC Open Data site says it goes until Fort Davis Drive...but neither is correct because there is no bike lane. Below are screenshots from google street view, github project, and DC gov data.

Hmm this does look like a "trail" in the far left based on the Google Street View, and we are mapping trails in this project right now. Eventually we'd like to filter by true bike lanes vs. trails but for now we treat both kinds of infrastructure equally.

Nevertheless, you said that what we are mapping is far more optimistic in reality - that the bike "trail" is much shorter than what we are mapping. Where exactly does this "trail" start and end @kttobin? Where is this "trail" actually a wide sidewalk?

The Fort Circle Park hiker-biker trail is a hiking trail that allows mountain bikes. However, the trail is not well maintained and there are a lot of downed trees. I am not sure if you want to include it in a map that is focused on biking for transportation. If you do want to include it, the trail is longer than what is currently listed in the GitHub or DC gov sites. Both of these sites just show the trail going from Penn Ave to Fort Mahan. However, the trail really extends from near Erie Street SE. (See full map here.)

Good question! I should have picked a different spot for google street view because the pretty "trail" you see in that shot is definitely the exception, not the rule. The only place with the black paved trail you see above is between 33rd Street SE and Alabama Ave, SE and only on the east side of the street. The rest of the time, it's a regular sidewalk, as you can see below (28th and Penn SE).
