Help with getting started contributing

Hello,

I am interested in contributing to the Haystack project and have been following the CONTRIBUTING.md guide section on "Setting up your development environment."

However, I am encountering a dependency issue when running certain hatch commands. I'm including some detail on the error messages I am receiving below.

NOTE: I have run all of the steps prior to the hatch run test:unit cmd in the Contribute code section and I'm inside of the hatch shell virtualenv when running these commands below.

$ hatch version
2.8.0-rc0
$ hatch run test:unit
  × No solution found when resolving dependencies:
  ╰─▶ Because only en-core-web-trf==3.8.0 is available and en-core-web-trf==3.8.0 depends on spacy-curated-transformers>=0.2.2,<1.0.0, we can conclude that all versions of en-core-web-trf depend on spacy-curated-transformers>=0.2.2,<1.0.0.

      Because only the following versions of torch are available:
          torch<=1.12.0
          torch==1.12.1
          torch==1.13.0
          torch==1.13.1
          torch==2.0.0
          torch==2.0.1
          torch==2.1.0
          torch==2.1.1
          torch==2.1.2
          torch==2.2.0
          torch==2.2.1
          torch==2.2.2
          torch==2.3.0
          torch==2.3.1
          torch==2.4.0
          torch==2.4.1
          torch==2.5.0
          torch==2.5.1
      and torch>=1.12.0 has no wheels with a matching Python ABI tag, we can conclude that torch>=1.12.0,<1.12.1 cannot be used.
      And because spacy-curated-transformers>=0.2.2,<=0.3.0 depends on torch>=1.12.0 and only the following versions of spacy-curated-transformers are available:
          spacy-curated-transformers<=0.2.2
          spacy-curated-transformers==0.3.0
          spacy-curated-transformers>1.0.0
      we can conclude that spacy-curated-transformers>=0.2.2,<1.0.0 cannot be used.
      And because we know from (1) that all versions of en-core-web-trf depend on spacy-curated-transformers>=0.2.2,<1.0.0, we can conclude that all versions of en-core-web-trf cannot be used.
      And because you require en-core-web-trf, we can conclude that your requirements are unsatisfiable.

Any suggestions or additional steps I should follow would be greatly appreciated.

Hey Anakin, thanks for the response,

• I'm on MacOS 15.1 Sequoia
• I believe that Hatch was installing python 3.13.0. At least thats what python version shows up when I run python --version after hatch shell.
• I have PyEnv installed locally as well and was wondering if that could be causing issues, but I couldn't really find anything saying so online.

I would try a previous version of Python. I remember some problems with 3.13.

You can probably enforce this by adding this line in pyproject:
requires-python = ">=3.9,<3.13"
