1) New
mmj2.jar Command Line Arguments</big><br
style="text-decoration: underline;">
<br>
Optional path name arguments were added to the <code
style="font-weight: bold;">mmj2.jar</code> command line for the
mmj2, Metamath, and mmj2 Service "home" directories. Here are the
mmj2.jar command line arguments (in order):<br>
<ol>
<li>RunParm file name. This is relative to the mmj2Path directory.
Mandatory.<br>
</li>
<li>Y/N to display the new MMJ2 Fail Popup Window when startup errors
and/or "fail" (abnormal termination) errors are encountered. On by
default.<br>
</li>
<li>The mmj2Path argument is used to specify mmj2 files and
directories. Optional. Use "" as a placeholder if omitted -- which
means use the Java Current Path as the mmj2Path.<br>
</li>
<li>The MetamathPath argument is used to specify Metamath files -- in
conjunction with RunParm "<code style="font-weight: bold;">LoadFile,set.mm</code>"
and
Metamath
Include
files
referenced
by
the
input
.mm
file.
Optional. Use "" as a placeholder if omitted -- which
means use the Java Current Path as the MetamathPath.</li>
<li>The SvcPath argument is used to specify the SvcFolder passed as
an argument in the mmj2 Service Feature (rarely used). Use "" as a
placeholder if omitted -- which means use the Java Current Path as the
SvcPath.</li>
</ol>
<br>
Thus, the mmj2.jar command line arguments have this format:<br>
<br>
<code style="font-weight: bold;">java -Xincgc
-Xms128M -Xmx256M -jar mmj2.jar </code><span
style="font-style: italic;">RunParmFileName
mmj2FailPopopWindow
mmj2Path
MetamathPath SvcPath ArgumentOptionsReport</span><br
style="font-style: italic;">
<br>
<br>
The actual Windows command line from <code style="font-weight: bold;">mmj2.bat</code>
is:<br>
<br>
<code style="font-weight: bold;">java -Xincgc
-Xms128M -Xmx256M -jar mmj2.jar RunParms.txt Y
"" c:\metamath</code> <code style="font-weight: bold;">
""</code><br>
<br>
<span style="font-style: italic;">Note: by using mmj2Path = </span><code>""</code><span
style="font-style: italic;"> the Java Current Path is used for the
mmj2 data path -- and in this case the Current Path is the location of <code>mmj2.bat</code>,
which
is
in the <code>mmj2jar</code> directory. So by using mmj2Path =
<code>""</code> we're making <code>mmj2.bat</code> portable so that no
changes are required if the mmj2jar directory is moved. In fact,
assuming that your <code>set.mm</code> file is installed at <code>c:\metamath\set.mm</code>
after you unzip the <code>mmj2.zip</code> download file you can simply
double-click <code>c:\mmj2\mmj2jar\mmj2.bat</code> to run mmj2.</span><br
style="font-style: italic;">
<br>
<br>
In Mac OSX the Applications/Utilities/Terminal <code
style="font-weight: bold;">source</code> file command line looks like
this (modify it to match your system and installations -- similar in
other Unix/Linux based systems):<br>
<br>
<code style="font-weight: bold;">java -Xincgc
-Xms128M -Xmx256M -jar mmj2.jar RunParms.txt Y
/Users/Userone/mmj2 /Users/userone/metamath</code><code
style="font-weight: bold;">
""</code><br>
<br>
<br>
For Mac OSX users an Applications/Utilities/Terminal <code
style="font-weight: bold;">source</code> file named <code
style="font-weight: bold;">MacRunMMJ2.txt</code> is provided. Modify
it to suit your system and installations (and locate it anywhere you
please), then enter the <code style="font-weight: bold;">Terminal</code>
command<br>
<br>
<code style="font-weight: bold;">source
MacRunMMJ2.txt</code><br>
<br>
<br>
<big style="font-weight: bold; text-decoration: underline;">2) RunParm
File Changes<br>
<br>
</big>The standard <code style="font-weight: bold;">RunParms.txt</code>
file was changed to be "platform agnostic" as well as friendlier and
simpler for new users, as follows:<br>
<ul>
<li>All path names in <code style="font-weight: bold;">RunParms.txt</code>
are relative (i.e. "<code style="font-weight: bold;">set.mm</code>"
instead of "<code style="font-weight: bold;">c:\metamath\set.mm</code>").</li>
<li><code style="font-weight: bold;">RunParms.txt</code> contains the
minimum number of RunParms to run the Proof Assistant GUI.</li>
<li>The "complete" version of <code style="font-weight: bold;">RunParms.txt</code>
is now named <code style="font-weight: bold;">RunParmsComplete.txt</code>
(same functionality but with all defaults specified, plus documentation
comments -- intended to help users easily figure out where to add
customizing
RunParms).</li>
</ul>
<br>
<big style="font-weight: bold; text-decoration: underline;">3)
New "mmj2 Fail Popup Window</big>"<br>
<br>
Command Line Argument #2 above is the "<code style="font-weight: bold;">displayMMJ2FailPopupWindow</code>"
argument.
How
it
works:<br>
<ul>
<li>mmj2 startup errors and mmj2 "fatal" errors (abnormal
terminations) will trigger a "popup" window showing the current RunParm
or command and the associated error message(s).</li>
<li>errors in the mmj2 command line arguments <span
style="font-style: italic; font-weight: bold;">do</span> trigger the
popup window even if "<code style="font-weight: bold;">n</code>" is
specified.<br>
</li>
<li>if "<code style="font-weight: bold;">n</code>" is specified, or
if this command line argument is omitted or
blank, the popup window is never triggered (i.e. no change to current
processing).</li>
<li>proof verification errors are excluded and <span
style="font-weight: bold; font-style: italic;">do not</span> trigger
the popup window.</li>
<li>"fatal" system errors such as <code style="font-weight: bold;">OutOfMemory</code>
and <code style="font-weight: bold;">UnableToShutdownRunawayThreadAndOMGWhyDidWeAcquireSun?</code>
exceptions <span style="font-weight: bold;"><span
style="font-style: italic;">do not</span></span> trigger the popup
window.</li>
</ul>
<br>
<br>
<big style="font-weight: bold; text-decoration: underline;">4)
New Command Line "Argument Option" Report</big><br>
<br>
Below is a sample of what you see running mmj2.bat from within the
Windows Command Prompt utility. <br>
<br>
Notice that the Argument Options Report shows the current version of
mmj2.jar, including the date/timestamp -- which should match the
date/timestamp of the mmj2.jar file itself. <br>

Also, notice that the Command Line Arguments are shown twice: first as
the are originally received by the program, and then again as they are
interpreted -- are for each path argument, in parthenseses, an example
file shows the full data path in effect. <br>

Old Command Line Arguments Eliminated</big>:<br>
<br>
These new mmj2.jar command line arguments replace existing
arguments which (apparently) are never used and will likely never be
used by anyone, ever... (not even in the mmj2 batch/regression test kit
):<br>
<ul>
<li>RunParm File Charset Name</li>
<li>RunParm File DelimitedTextParser Delimiter Character</li>
<li>RunParm File DelimitedTextParser Quoter Character.</li>

style="font-weight: bold;">BELOW is documentation written about the
new Paths arguments prior to writing code. You may find it useful or
interesting, but probably not. Feel free to stop reading and ignore the
rest of this document.</span></big></big><br style="font-style: italic;">
<hr style="width: 100%; height: 2px; font-style: italic;">
<h2>The Problem</h2>
mmj2 allows files to be specified using either "absolute" or "relative"
paths. See <a
href="http://download.oracle.com/javase/1,5.0/docs/api/java/io/File.html">http://download.oracle.com/javase/1,5.0/docs/api/java/io/File.html</a>
for an excellection discussion of absolute vs. relative path names.<br>
<br>
Unfortunately, (with a few exceptions such as the <code
style="font-weight: bold;">ProofAsstProofFolder</code> RunParm
specification), the general parent of relative path names cannot be
specified inside
mmj2 -- and default to the <span style="font-style: italic;">Current
Path</span> (the directory from
which mmj2 is being run or the path set by the "<code>pushd</code>"
command used
when running mmj2.) <br>
<br>
As a result:<br>
<ul>
<li>Absolute path names specific to Windows are used throughout the <code
style="font-weight: bold;">mmj2.zip</code> software package files,
including
the batch/regression test kit which makes regression testing on other
platforms such as Max OSX inconvenient.</li>
<li>The distinction between where mmj2 is installed/run and where the
user stores data and customizations is not supported directly by mmj2,
and this may inconvenience users when new releases of mmj2 are
installed.</li>
<li>RunParms.txt is not "platform agnostic", meaning that users of
non-Windows systems are always required to customize <code
style="font-weight: bold;">RunParms.txt</code> simply to change
absolute path names.</li>
<li>The entire absolute/relative path issue is somewhat ambiguous and
murky for users, to the point where at least one user actually
installed software on his Mac in order to be able to run mmj2 in a
Windows environment! (What a waste of time and money.)</li>
</ul>
<br>
<hr style="width: 100%; height: 2px;">
<h2>The Solution</h2>
Optional path name arguments will be added to the mmj2.jar command line
(in mmj2.bat) to specify the mmj2 and the Metamath "home" directories:<br>
<ul>
<li>These will be used throughout mmj2 in every coding instance
involving a file: the Metamath path name applies only to the <code
style="font-weight: bold;">LoadFile</code> RunParm, the mmj2 Service
path name applies and the mmj2 path name applies to everything else.<br>
</li>
<li>They may themselves be either absolute paths or relative, but <span
style="text-decoration: underline;">the intention is that they will
most commonly be absolute specifications</span>.</li>
<li>They must be optional and transparent, meaning that existing <code
style="font-weight: bold;">mmj2.bat</code> and <code
style="font-weight: bold;">RunParm.txt</code> files must generate
unchanged results.<br>
</li>
<li>Additional path arguments at a lower level were considered and
rejected as potentially raising more problems than they solve (e.g. a
Proof Assistant Path, or a GMFF Path, or even a path for every single
different file used anywhere in mmj2).</li>
<li>Also considered: the idea of also adding RunParm commands to
allow the paths to be changed during processing -- idea shelved for
now: potentially useful for testing but not absolutely necessary and
worse, adding complications (such as when is the parent path "bound" to
a file's path -- at first use or when the RunParm is processed?)</li>
<li>Note: the SvcPath argument was added at the last minute for the
sake of completeness. I am not aware of anyone using the mmj2 Service
Feature which allows mmj2 facilities to be accessed by an external
program. However, if we're going to even have an mmj2 Service Feature
then it has to be supported, and it is reasonable to suppose that an
external program will not locate its data inside the mmj2 directories.
No, it would have its own direct<br>
</li>
</ul>
Here is how a path name argument will be used. Let's use LoadFile as an
example:<br>
<ul>
<li>If the LoadFile file parameter is an absolute path name (i.e.
"c:\metamath\set.mm") then the Metamath Path Name is ignored;</li>
<li>Otherwise, if the Metamath Path Name argument is omitted or is
blank or is an empty string, the LoadFile File will be constructed
relative to the Current Path (as is done presently);</li>
<li>Otherwise, the LoadFile File will be constructed relative to the
Metamath Path Name (which may itself be relative to the current path!)</li>
</ul>
