Not sure if I should have separated this into 2 issues, but they seem connected so . . .

This is related to issue #179 which was closed, but is still an issue on both of my computers. Ubuntu Budgie and Ubuntu Gnome Flashback. Toolbar shows the generic icon, except for a few seconds upon closing the correct icon briefly appears. Also clicking on fullscreen does nothing. I thought the 2 issues might be related since in the deb version the icon problem also happens, but after clicking fullscreen (which works in the deb version) the correct icon appears and stays until Spotify is closed. Fullscreen must be engaged again upon repoening Spotify for the correct icon to appear.

Sorry. Should have put that in the first post. Lastest version listed inflatpak list is 1.1.72.439.gc253025e.

I must make a correction. Fullscreen does work, but only after playing something in Spotify. After newly installing Spotify and opening for the first time, fullscreen would not work on either of my 2 computers until I played something. So now the workaround of fullscreening-the-window-to-make-the-correct-icon-show-temporarily works, but the icon problem still persists. And since it also happens in the deb version is probably not a flatpak issue. I don't know if the issue with fullscreening in the flatpak version is actually an issue or something that has always been present and I just never noticed because I never tried to use the feature before playing something in Spotify. I also don't know if the connection of the two issues helps someone figure out why the icon doesn't show in either version without a workaraound.

You say you can fullscreen after playing something in spotify. Do you have to actually play something, or will it work if you just click somewhere in the window without clicking any actual buttons?

Also, what window manager/dock extension are you using? The default ones that come with gnome/budgie or something else?

Okay, I uninstalled and reinstalled Spotify a couple of times to test this. I had to uninstall and delete my spotify data as well to replicate this. I'm not sure this is a problem, but just a feature. I tried it in the snap version as well and it did the same thing. When the app is opened for the first time no song is selected in the bottom toolbar where the fullscreen button is. The play, forward, back, and fullscreen buttons will not work until a song is selected and played. At which point the song name shows up in the bottom toolbar and all the buttons then work. And no, clicking anywhere else in the window does not make them work. Only playing a song or podcast, etc.

As for window managers, I did the testing on my budgie machine running stock mutter as window manager. The other machine, which I didn't do this latest test on, is running compiz. Please don't laugh.

Also, once I switch to fullscreen the titlebar changes from Spotify to Spotify Premium, and then stays that way if I un-fullscreen. That is until I close and reopen Spotify. So similar to the icon.

I think it makes sense that the play/pause/fwd/back buttons don't work upon installation until you play a song. This seems like a reflection of the fact that it doesn't know what to play until you click on something.

It sounds like the icon/fullscreen issue is an upstream problem, but I'm not sure. It seems like somehow the window is waiting for events and then it is updating values like the icon/title bar. Since it is affecting snap+flatpak+deb, I don't think there's anything I can think to do on that front. You could try filing an issue with https://community.spotify.com/t5/Desktop-Linux/bd-p/desktop_linux.

You could leave the issue in this repo open just for others to find if they are experiencing the same problems though.
