need option to include items without specifying publish date

This package looks really useful for a project I'm working on, except that we don't want to add an explicit publish date to each file by hand. Everything for our site is tracked in git, so we would like to take the commit or create date for an article to use as the date.

I would be happy to implement this as an option, retaining the current behavior as the default. Are you still maintaining this package? Are you interested in a patch like that?
