I was having problems with trying to resize images and there is a very nice solution at https://discourse.gohugo.io/t/resize-an-image-with-markdown/34833/12?u=jehoshua7
You may be able to use that ? There is also a gallery example at https://tranquilpeak.kakawait.com/2013/02/image-gallery-showcase/ that may help ?
