This option is supported in several sites like lishogi.org and pychess.org,
so it can save player’s time in tough moments and make drops area more visible. So dragging can be used also in this case.

If you agree, maybe it will be possible for players to choose the method of dropping (drag, click-click or both) in user’s settings.

I suspect that any non-hacky implementation is going to need to modify lichess-org/chessground as well.
