Templater no longer works within task query?

relatively new to some plugins. I'm having a problem with what I think used to work (last time I tried task management).
I am using the latest versions of Tasks and Templater and Obsidian
Example:

not done 
due <% tp.date.now("YYYY-MM-DD") %> 
sort by priority 

This no longer works. An error "Tasks query: Instruction contains unexpanded template text: "<%" - and cannot be interpreted." is displayed. This query is in a daily notes template.
Are Templater commands no longer supported?

Templater commands have never been supported by Tasks. It always gave wrong or misleading answers for many searches and users were not noticing.

Yes. I had put it in a daily notes template file.

That's great. So I am still stumped as to why the following ended up, unexpanded, in your query...

due <% tp.date.now("YYYY-MM-DD") %>

Honestly, I have no idea.
It did work before, but then seemed to stop...what I put down to more robust error checking.

Previously, tasks always interpreted the following text:

due <% tp.date.now("YYYY-MM-DD") %> 

as:

due today

That is, the now was already interpreted as today's date, regardless of any dates in the file path.

This confused some users and was not what they expected, which is why I added the check...

If you are trying to search for tasks due today, there's no need for a template at all...

I'll preface this with I'm not that familiar with the range of abilities of many plugins...I'm gradually accumulating more knowledge.
I tried your suggestion exactly. It worked, but it seemed I couldn't click on the task to mark it 'done'. I may have put 'due today' in a tasks query...can't remember.
What I did then was to put it into a tasks query with 'not done' as well as due today.
