@bomeara has implemented a proof-of-concept service that takes an unscaled tree as input and produces a scaled tree, using sequence data from the BOLD (barcode of life) project. Such a service will be a useful part of a mature phylotastic ecosystem, as there are many taxa where the fossil record is poor.

  1. consider requirements for a scaling service. what use-cases must it support? what operations must it provide?

  2. assess available methods for scaling from readily available sequence data, and consider strategic collaborators.

  3. sketch a plan for a web service and get feedback on the plan.
