Way to batch display activities

Is there a better way to display activities made by an activist or on a model other than taking all activities and grouping them by date and sending each to a partial to render?

something like

John has a new photo and is friends with Mike

instead of

John has a new photo
John is friends with Mike

Those are two separate activity types, don't see why you would want to group friendship notifications with photo uploads.
