Gentoo has dropped support for python2 and even python lower then 3_7 for a while now. Will older versions of ROS work with python3_7? If not, should they be removed from the tree?

@flabrosse I took some time to get things on a path to where noetic might start being successful. 🎉 (at the moment stuck emerging boost, but hoping you'll give things a shot soon!).

On the subject of this issue, though, I'm not entirely sure what to do. Older versions of ROS do compile with python 3 (so long as I remove the older targets), but they don't function in the ways that they should (tf, for example, is just broken). At the moment, I'm of the opinion that, since Gentoo has dropped support for python 2, that's probably the right course of action here.

Do you have any more thoughts on this? I'm going to clean up kinetic, at the very least (as it is eol). I'll leave melodic around for the time being.

Hi @allenh1, very sorry, but I have completely dropped gentoo now (moved to ubuntu and I hate it) because I just could not afford the time spent on these issues.

I seem to remember that I had a working system last time, after changing all the python versions, but I didn't do a very thorough testing...

No worries! Very much same story here. I have not been good about keeping up with Gentoo, and the whole Python2 drop really messed things up...

I also work with mostly ROS 2 these days, so that's been my primary focus.

Hopefully I can get things stable again! Missed my Gentoo system.
