rspec-autotest version: latest
Rails Version: 5.1.4

I have to update .autotest file to the following, in order to autotest working with Rails:

require "autotest/rails_rspec"

It was not picked up automatically, as stated in the README.md.

This shouldn't be necessary, did you add the extra gem as specified in the readme?
