Can't check equipment back in - company id error?

When trying to checkout certain pieces of equipment, we receive the following error:

Error: Asset was not checked out, please try again{"company_id":["The selected company id is invalid."]}

Not certain how to get past this, if it's an issue with a user or the asset.

Anyone have any idea? We like the tool, but have very little idea how to troubleshoot.
