I have a USB serial RS485 interface connected to my Epever PV controller Tracer3210A.
This is connected to a Mikrotik RB750 which supports access to the remote COM port over IP as per RFC2217.

I would really like this script to optionally open a socket to the remote tcp port to send/receive the data. I feel this should not be hard. I'm happy to help test etc. or write the code if you can give me some pointers?!

Have a look at http://randomsporadicprojects.blogspot.co.uk/2016/11/instructions-for-creating-dashboard-to_9.html as that looks to be doing something similar to what you want. May help/give clues.
