julielab-topic-modeling

This is the master thesis implementation work of Philipp Sieg. The major goal is to provide a software package for

  1. generating topic models,
  2. indexing documents with models,
  3. using the indexes for information retrieval, and
  4. evaluating models both qualitatively and quantitatively.

The folder tm-search-components contains the final versions of each component. The topic modeling functionality depends strongly on an implementation from the Machine Learning for Language Toolkit, v. 2.0.9 (MALLET; McCallum 2002). The NLP preprocessing components are taken from JCoRe, v. 2.3.0-SNAPSHOT (Hahn et al. 2016). The implementation of this topic modeling module consists of 5 components, deployed as Maven projects, v. 3.5.2:

julielab-topic-modeling

This is the main project and the main dependency for the other projects. It implements the major functions for reading, preprocessing, training, and infering labels to documents. It contains the TopicModelGenerator, a commandline-tool for generating topic models on a given data set. The data set my be read from a file system or a database.

julielab-tm-heldout-evaluator

This is a simple commandline-tool for calculating and monitoring a held-out document evaluation. It uses the MALLET implementation of the left-to-right algorithm developed by Wallach (2008).

jcore-topic-indexing-ae

This is a JCoRe-component that infers labels to new documents and stores them in an index. The AE saves the index along with the whole model in a serialized object file at the end of the indexing process. The index is intended to be used by the search function provided by julielab-topic-modeling.

jcore-topicmodeling-types

This is a UIMA typesystem for the jcore-topic-indexing-ae defining the features of a topic label.

jcore-tm-index-merger

This is a simple commanline-tool that merges a set of serialized model files from multiple jcore-topic-indexing-ae processes.

Additionally, the project provides configuration templates you can find here: https://github.com/JULIELab/julielab-topic-modeling/tree/master/configs
