Translating WISE
WISE supports translations of the user-management system and the learning environment. Projects can also be authored and offered in different languages.
The following components are translatable:
- WISE-Portal: Includes user management, project library, classroom run management, admin tools
- Virtual Learning Environment (WISE-VLE): Includes student project environment and the authoring tool
- WISE step types: Includes tools like Open Response, Multiple Choice, Drawing, etc.
- WISE themes: Includes WISE main theme and WISE star map theme.
- Projects (authored content): Using the Authoring Tool (which is part of the VLE), curriculum authors can create projects in their own language.
You'll be translating directly on GitHub, where we host our code.
-
Go to http://github.com and sign up for a new account.
-
Find the file that you'll be translating from the "Translation Files" list section below. Each of these links will list all the languages. You'll want to edit the file i18n_LOCALE.json, where LOCALE is your language. (es=spanish, ja=japanese, zh_CN=simplified chinese, zh_TW=traditional chinese, etc). Click on the link to view the file.
In this example, we'll be translating the Open Response component in Japanese.
- Click on the "Edit this file" icon (a pencil icon). This will open the edit page view.
- Translate by editing the strings on the right side of the colon (":").
- When you are done, or want to take a break, save your work by scrolling to the bottom of the page and click con "Commit Changes". You can keep the fields selected by default. This will save your changes.
- Repeat for other tools and components.

The WISE Translation Form is a simple web form that you can use to translate WISE. Thanks for your help!
To get started, follow these steps:
-
Type in your name and email address. Use your real name&email address, and choose the language. If you do not see the language that you want to translate, write to the developer list (http://groups.google.com/group/wise-dev) or email us at telsportal at gmail dot com.
-
Once you enter the site, you will see links to the various parts of WISE that you can translate. We recommend that you translate in this order: VLE->Themes->Steps->Portal.
-
Start translating. If you encounter problems or questions, email us.
-
As you translate, remember to hit the "save" button often. This will save your translations on our server, and also email them to you for backup. A dialog will also appear with the contents of the translation file. You can copy and paste this into a local file for backup!
-
When you are done, press "Save", then the "I am done" button. This will notify us, and we will review and add your translations to the future releases of WISE.
-
If you have your own instance of WISE and want to update your WISE instance with your translations immediately, click on the download button (next to the project name in the main page or in the translation page), save them in the appropriate location, then restart WISE.
Where to save the translation files:
- VLE: tomcat_wise_dir/vle/view/i18n/
- Themes: tomcat_wise_dir/vle/themes/[starmap,wise]/i18n/
- Steps: tomcat_wise_dir/vle/node/[assessmentlist,brainstorm,...]/i18n/
- Portal: tomcat_wise_dir/WISE-INF/classes/i18n/
To translate the WISE curriculum, you want to do the following:
-
Log into WISE with a teacher account and go to "Browse WISE Projects". This will list the main WISE projects.
-
Pick a project that you want to translate and copy it by clicking on the "Copy" link in the project listing. This will make a copy of the project and add it to your own project library.
-
Find the copied project in your project library. There should be an "Edit" link next to it. Click it, and this will launch the WISE Authoring Tool.
-
Use the Authoring Tool to translate each step to your language. As you translate, you can click on the "Preview Project" button in the upper-right corner of the Authoring Tool to preview the project.
