style: Fix typos and add codespell pre-commit hook

This PR is an internal copy of #173:

This PR fixes typos found by running codespell on the repository.

It also adds a codespell pre-commit hook so that typos are caught faster in the future.
I also updated the package versions in the `.pre-commit-config.yaml file.

with the following additional changes:

• codespell has been upgraded to v2.3.0
• additional typos have been fixed
• all checks now pass
