Welcome to the atlas-medliq wiki! This is where you can learn how to extend the project.

Context

Atlas of Mediterranean Liquidity is an ongoing project of interactive maps, regarding climate change’s effect on water problems around the Mediterranean.

The platform offers a growing collection of maps, devoted to different questions about the Mediterranean Liquidity: Water use, people and culture around water sources, historical events of disasters and damage to the sea, future speculations about changing waterlines or drinking water shortages and so on; not only to coastal regions but to the entire geographical area of neighboring countries, including inland areas.

The project is a collaborative effort of the Goethe-Institut and CDA Holon to create new ways of learning, thinking and understanding different issues and perspectives regarding water in and around the Mediterranean.

Formats

Each of the maps in the atlas lives in a dedicated web page as a standalone responsive web application. Meaning, the web technology used on each of the maps is not dictated by the project and can really be whatever works for you. The homepage on medliq.art serves as the map index and requires:

  • map title
  • short description (~200 characters)
  • representative image: 920x588px

You are welcomed to build on existing maps or to create a new map as a new web project to be added to the atlas. Do note that all the code in the project is expected to be published under an open source license.

Build on Existing Maps

So far 3 maps have been created in the project. All of them are available as open source code which you are welcomed to add content to, duplicate as-is or expand to a new map. All of these maps are using a mix of the following technologies:

Water Above Water Below

This is a user-generated content map for point based entries including text, images and audio.

You can find it here: https://medliq.art/water-above-water-below

On the Water Above Water Below documentation page you will learn how to add Content to this map.

Speculative Tourism: Sea Change

This is a timeline for historic and speculative geographic narratives. It allows to create events in the form of media on the map (audio, YouTube embeds, images, fake tweets, fake Wikipedia articles, fake Instagram embeds etc...

You can find it here: https://medliq.art/speculative-tourism-sea-change

On the Speculative Tourism: Sea Change documentation page you will learn:

  • How to add Content to this map
  • How to create a new instance of this map

Troubled Waters: The Nile Conflict

This is a map presenting a set of audio clips from different speakers, each with its own corresponding map views and custom map graphics.

You can find it here: https://medliq.art/troubled-waters-the-nile-conflict

On the Troubled Waters: The Nile Conflict documentation page you will learn:

  • How to add Content to this map
  • How to create a new instance of this map

Create a new map

Here we will explain how to add new maps to the project without depending on our own technology.
