Hardware Topology Point on Tracks
- Jean-Baptiste Besnard
- Julien Jaeger
- Guillaume Mercier
Observing that we had only a limited feedback from the community we agreed to pursue the unfolding of our ideas around the three identified axes:
- An implicit access to the topology (e.g through the hierarchical communicators interface)
- An explicit description of the topology (e.g through the MPI-T query interface)
- How the mapping and binding of processes/threads/endpoints could be addressed in a standard fashion (which includes some reflexions on how we could abstract mpirun/mpiexec and more generally launch capabilities)
We agreed that any work on these topics should be the object of a prototype implementation and correctly backed-up before being presented to the Forum. At this point, we would then be sure to get some feedback from the other members (that is, outside of the WG). For this, our work has to be steady and coherent to catch interest from a wider community.
To do so, each person willing to participate should book a presentation slot among the next meetings to present his vision and the associated content shall be put on the wiki. Meanwhile, precise and technical issues are to be created on the wiki with the eventual goal of being brought to the Forum.
It has been pointed out that the goal of the WG is to write proposals to the standard. Guillaume told that he would start specifying his interface to prepare a future presentation to the Forum. We also insisted on the importance of having the prototype implementation beforehand to prove the feasibility and usefulness of the proposal and to help and encourage feedback.
At one point, once our proposal(s) will be more fleshed out and coherent we will have to consider addressing directly to communities linked to our concern. Guillaume had first contacts with the OpenMP group and will consider contacting them to synchronize. The fact of contacting the PMI community was also pointed out as they are working on aspects close to the third pillar in an MPI-agnostic manner. Guillaume will have to ask the Forum about how such outreach should happen. Jean-Baptiste also pointed out his interest in User-Defined Software Stacks and may bring some of his concerns/questions in the context of the third topic (around launch).
