Interview for the GitHub Open Source Community Manager Program

Dear applicant, welcome!

This page is here to enable you to book an interview with the OpenFisca core team. If the link was sent to you, it means we have reviewed and approved your profile, and we are curious to learn more about you and want to assess how it would feel to work together 🙂

Interview process

Goals

If you are at this stage, first of all, feel assured we are already impressed with what we have seen of you. Our goal is now to make sure our collaboration would be beneficial for both yourself and our community. To that end, we now want to:

  • Interact directly and figure out how communication works between us.
  • Assess how aligned we are in values.
  • Clarify any uncertainties we might have had when reading your profile.
  • Ensure we both understand each other’s goals in a potential collaboration.
  • Determine which areas of work you are most excited about and on which you would need training or guidance on, if any.

Process

On the OpenFisca side, a member of the Core team will be present as well as, depending on the time, potentially some major contributors.

The interview will last for a maximum duration of 60 minutes. The plan is as follows:

  1. Check-in: we'll make a round of presentation and context disclosure (what is my name, where I am, how I feel in this moment). Expected duration: 5-10 min.
  2. Reverse presentation of you: we will present what we have understood of your professional context and goals from reading your profile, and you will correct everything we understood wrong 😉 Expected duration: 5 min.
  3. Reverse presentation of OpenFisca: you will present what you have understood of our context and goals, and we will clarify as needed. Expected duration: 10 min.
  4. Jobs to be done: we will give several examples of cases that we are considering tasking your role with, and you will tell us how you would handle them. Expected duration: 20 min.
  5. Closing: an opportunity to go back on some of what has been said, set expectations, and go through any final thoughts. Expected duration: 5-10 min.

An important note: it is totally fine and expected that you are not immediately able to find a perfect answer for the cases presented in point 4. We likely have more areas that need work than any single person could contribute to. Our goal is to identify those for which you could contribute to immediately, those for which you will need training, and those that are out of your scope. The only mistake you could make would be being assertive that you can do something when you actually think you'll need some assistance.

You might notice that the sum of the expected durations is less than one hour. We account for some extra time to make sure our conversation is not rushed. If we do finish earlier, do not understand this as a negative sign: this just means we could gather all necessary information easily 🙂

Logistics

The conversation will take place via a video call on Jitsi. The name of the room will be provided to you over email, at the email address you used when you applied.

The usual recommendations for video calls apply. Please make sure to have:

  • a stable and fast internet connection;
  • proper lighting;
  • limited background noise;
  • your eyes on the upper third of the frame.

Even if you are very used to video calls, please do not underestimate the importance of this setup! If for any reason we have a hard time communicating during the interview, it will be hard for us not to assume that we are likely to have a hard time communicating throughout our collaboration.

Dress code & language

As stated in our goals, what we want is to get a feel of how it would be to work together. Please dress and talk to us as you would if we had already been working together for 2 months 🙂 we will be our usual selves and we hope you will feel comfortable to do the same.
