This database was created in December 2023 by Samuel Forrest of St John’s College, Oxford. Forrest was responsible for updating Kenyon (1914) and Grenfell (1919) with P.Oxy. I–XLIX and for most of the scripting. The resulting collection was greatly augmented from other sources over the following months, with the first phase of the project completed in May 2024.
The writers currently covered are those of F. W. Hall’s Companion for Greek and of Texts and Transmission for Latin, insofar as relevant data is available in existing editions.
Conjectures based on ancient translation are not recorded; restorations to papyri are recorded only if they emend a previous restoration. A conjecture is included, on the other hand, even if it was retracted; no praise is withheld where it is due. ‘Manuscripts’ are understood broadly (libri manu scripti), as opposed to printed books (impressi) and their marginalia. Readings marked by editors with ‘dispexit’, ‘ut videtur’, ‘fortasse’, ‘?’ or as glosses are not used. Extra-stemmatic readings are rejected as anonymous conjectures only if external evidence shows this to be the case.
The schema was designed to harmonise with that used in the Amsterdam Database of NT Conjectures.
