OI 2 - Startup Procedures

Derived from Reference (a)

CAUTION ⚠ Do NOT operate Spot with less than two people present. This robot is not human-safe and can cause injury if improperly operated.

CAUTION ⚠ Only lift Spot with two people. The combined robot-arm assembly weighs nearly 90 pounds and is not ergonomic.

CAUTION ⚠ Only operate Spot in a controlled space to prevent bystander interaction.

OI 2.1 - Before Startup

  1. Perform pre-startup inspection of the robot. This should include inspection of all robot body panels, inspection of cameras, and inspection of the battery and battery compartment. If arm is installed on Spot, check that all joints and the manipulator/gripper assembly show no signs of visible damage.
  2. If nothing appears abnormal, proceed to the remaining startup steps. If any abnormalities are found, correct them before proceeding.
  3. Confirm that the software versions shown on the robot and controller match.
  4. Make an entry in the Spot Usage Log on the clipboard near the robot.
  5. Unplug the robot from Ethernet, power, and any other connections and properly reinstall port covers.
  6. Ensure all bystanders are aware the robot is being activated. If necessary, cordon off an area for the robot to operate in.

OI 2.2 - Robot Startup Instructions

    3. Check battery charge by using the State of Charge button on the battery or battery level indication on the robot controller to ensure that the robot has enough charge for operation. If battery charge is below 40%, remove the battery per OI 5.1.2. and charge it before using the robot.

    4. Press and hold the power button for two seconds. The fans should turn on and spin loudly for approximately two minutes while Spot's computers and WiFi network are booting.

  2. Once the lights on the front of the robot are flashing rainbow and fans ramp down, connect the controller as follows:

    1. Power on the controller and open the Spot app.
    2. Select the appropriate network to control the robot. See OI 6 for network configuration information.
    3. Select the Spot from the list of available WiFi networks. The Spot should appear as (INSERT NAME HERE).
    4. Enter the user name and password:
      1. Username: admin
      2. Password: bn537eyexetcd
    5. Select "Power On" on the controller.
  3. Enable motor power by pressing the motor lockout button on the rear of the robot. Ensure any bystanders are clear of the robot and operators are attentive. Spot could now move unexpectedly and is considered an active robot.

  4. Once the motor lockout button is flashing red, turn motor power on using the tablet.

    1. Select the power icon, then slide the motor power toggle to 'on'. The button will flash faster, then turn solid red. This indicates that motors are fully powered on and the robot is ready for use.
