To resolve the name of a GNU/Linux-based server on a local network from a Windows computer, there has been three options previously:
- Run a local DNS server and configure your Windows computer to use it for name lookups,
- Run a NetBIOS responder (such as nmbd from Samba) on each server computer, or
- Add host entries in the hosts file on each Windows computer.
The first option requires you to register each server computer to the DNS server and keep the record up-to-date. You also have to configure each Windows computer manually (it can be quite problematic) or by DHCP.
The second option requires nothing more than running NetBIOS responders, but you are forced to use IPv4 even if both ends support IPv6 since NetBIOS supports IPv4 addresses only.
