Races: Koroks
The Spirits of the Forest, once known as Kikwi, have gone mostly into hiding since the Era of Chaos began. Their new, much smaller, Korok form allows them to hide easily in their forest home. The Koroks have a good relationship with the Hylians though, even to the point of offering protection for the Hylian Garrison which was set up in their forest.
The Spirits of the Forest are based on the ancient Celtic culture, which was composed of people from Ireland, Scotland, and Wales who came to speak the same language. In the same way, the Forest Spirit culture is composed of all three forms of the spirits - the Kikwi, Koroks, and Kokiri. The Forest Spirits do not commit anything to writing - but this is certainly not to say they are an ignorant people. By tradition, information is committed to memory and passed on orally - there are no written records. This gives the spirits a rich culture but also makes them seem elitist since others think they are keeping secrets. The beliefs of the Forest Spirits are summed up in one word - Deku - which means "Knowing [or Finding] the Tree” in their language. The center of their forest houses a very large and sentient tree, known as the Great Tree or Deku Tree (or sometimes both combined). Once a year the Spirits assemble at this sacred place, and all legal disputes are submitted to the judgment of the Deku Tree. The Spirits study ancient verse, natural philosophy, astronomy, and the lore of the gods. Their principal doctrine is that the Spirit never truly perishes and can be passed to a mortal body as required.
The forest elemental, the Korok Emerald has been stored for safe-keeping in the Garrison fort that was built by the Hylians in the deep woods.
